Episodes
Episode 1: MONTSERRAT
Enric, a man very much turned inward, is beset by his past when he watches the new religious music band that everyone in the country is making fun of on television: Stella Maris. They are his sisters, but one of them is missing, Irene, and he needs to know if she’s okay. He doesn’t stop until he gets her phone number, but she doesn’t want to talk.
The memories from his past take him to the 80s, when his very young mother leaves his father and takes him and his little sister Irene to a seedy apartment. Montse is more into partying and sex than into her children to such an extent that one day, when they’re at home alone, a fire starts in the building and their neighbor’s son dies.
Episode 2: RESURRECTION
Enric is sure that his sisters are in danger and looks for them unsuccessfully. Irene lives her dull daily life when she discovers a graffiti at her workplace that reads ‘RESURRECTION’, which turns her world upside down, making her revive the past that she tried so hard to bury.
In the past, Irene and Enric live a totally normal life with their grandparents and their aunt Laia when Montse takes them again. Their mother’s periods of absence, who’s now a prostitute, are longer and longer, so long that Laia threatens her to take the kids from her. Montse, who’s desperate, accepts Pep’s offer, a religious fanatic who’s just gotten out from Opus Dei: if she confesses all her sins to him, he’ll help her to disappear with her children, who will now be named Isaiah and Resurrection.
Episode 3: SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN
It’s the 80s and Enric, Irene and Montse have made a new start isolated from everything in the middle of the forest. They cannot go beyond their courtyard since the devil resides outside. Montse resignedly accepts everything that Pep says. She gives birth one daughter after another and she falls into a deep depression. She then locks herself in her bedroom where she searches for the meaning of life compulsively reading the Bible and other Catholic texts.
Irene and Enric are forced to take care of their sisters in a home where misery and terror are prevalent. Enric gets out of the house to help Pep in his job and manages to steal the musical Singin’ in the Rain. The movie, the music and the dance make Enric and his sisters believe in a new world that provides meaning to their dark existence.
Everything changes when Montse gets out of her room saying God is talking through her and He told her they have to save the world.
Episode 4: DIVINE INSTRUCTIONS TO SAVE THE WORLD
It’s the 90s and Montserrat is obsessed about going to the Vatican. For that purpose, she uses Irene and Enric and sends them to a big religious music festival so they can perform doing one of their dances. They make a fool out of themselves, but Irene takes the opportunity to memorize a phone number. She calls in secret to ask for help. A few days later, Social Services get into their house and take their sisters.
At the present time, Irene and Enric meet again. Enric talks Irene into going to the last house where Irene lived with their sisters, but when they get there, they find a rave party and no trace of Stella Maris. However, Enric gets the address of the new family home.
Episode 5: A WOMAN DRESSED IN SUN
It’s the 90s and Montse manages to take the girls out of the foster home under the condition that she provides schooling for the girls, Irene goes to a sewing workshop and Enric starts working at Red Cross. At home, everything is worse. Montse is convinced that they have to do a ritual at Christmas
Eve to save the world: a mass suicide that Montse stops before everyone is suffocated. That makes Enric run away from home.
At the present time, Enric finds the house where all his sisters now live and there is every indication that his mother wants to repeat the ritual since Christmas Eve is approaching. Enric is desperate and calls Irene. They have to get their sisters out of there, but she wants to do things legally and reports their mother. Enric feels that time is running out, so he tries to enter the house and, when he does, he is so drunk, frustrated and enraged that he breaks down and faints.
Episode 6: THE SON OF MY MOTHER’S TEARS
Irene arrives at the house afraid that it might be too late, but she finds an almost macabre peace. Montse suffers from a terminal cancer and wants to gather all her daughters one last time. She has been sending signals to Irene to come back home whenever she was ready, since Irene is the only one who can save the family according to her last revelation.
Montse wasn’t expecting Enric to answer to the summon, as well. The whole family is gathered and they aired all the skeletons in their cupboard. That is the first and last time they get to say everything to their faces. Cecilia uses the chaos of the house to run away.
Episode 7: A VOICE PREACHES IN THE WILDERNESS
Irene takes Cecilia in to help her build a life of freedom and she finally tells her husband the truth about her past, breaking the strain her mother had burdened her with: ‘No person who knows where you come from is going to love you.’
Enric realizes he has spent his whole life trying to save other people and he needs to embark on an introspective journey to try and save himself once and for all. That way, he will be able to heal his childhood traumas.
Monserrat dies and it seems that everything is coming to an end, but Aina, one of Stella Maris members, is sure she has inherited her mother’s powers: God can now talk through her and she is going to follow His mission. Their sisters and Pep lock themselves in the house again.
